ChatGPT connects to Moshi as an app: OpenAI’s name for a remote MCP server. You create the app yourself in developer mode and point it at Moshi’s server URL.
OpenAI renamed these in July 2026. A remote MCP server is now an app, and apps live in the Plugin directory. Older material calls the same thing a custom connector.

Plan requirements

Apps are enabled by default on Business and disabled by default on Enterprise and Education. There is no mobile support.
OpenAI is actively migrating this admin surface, and its help articles describe two different layouts. These steps were checked against OpenAI’s documentation on 9 September 2026. If your workspace does not match, look for the equivalent item under Apps or Plugins in workspace settings.

Business

Only workspace admins and owners can do this. An admin cannot enable developer mode on behalf of another member; each admin enables it for themselves.
1

Turn on developer mode

Open User Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings, and turn on Developer mode.
2

Create the app

Open Workspace settings, then Apps, then Create.
3

Enter the server URL

Give the app a name and description, then enter the endpoint. The /mcp path matters.
4

Choose OAuth

Select OAuth for authentication, then select Scan Tools. Complete the Moshi sign-in prompt and select your organization.
5

Create and publish

Select Create. The app lands in Drafts. Open Workspace settings, then Apps, then Drafts, then Publish.
A published app appears for members under Settings, then Apps, labelled custom.

Enterprise and Education

An admin grants access first. Open Workspace Settings, then Permissions & Roles, then Connected Data. Each enabled user then turns the mode on under Settings, then Apps, then Advanced Settings. Creating the app follows the Business steps above. The publish dialog adds Configure Actions and Configure Access for role-based access. After publishing, select the ellipsis, then Action control, to review actions. New actions arrive disabled, and changes are shown as a diff.

Pro and individual accounts

1

Turn on developer mode

Open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.
2

Create the app

Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and select the plus button. The plus button only creates developer-mode apps once developer mode is on.
3

Connect

Enter a name and description. Under Connection, enter https://mcp.moshi.ai/mcp, then create the connection and review the tools it finds.
Use the app in a conversation by selecting Developer mode from the composer plus menu.

What ChatGPT does not do

Moshi’s two guided workflows are MCP prompts. OpenAI does not document support for MCP prompts, so ask for a report in your own words instead of looking for a command.
Agent mode does not use custom apps. Deep research can use them, but with read and fetch only. Voice mode does not support apps. Company knowledge includes only apps that expose search and fetch tools. ChatGPT asks before running a write action. A tool that does not declare itself read-only is treated as a write action.

Keep the connection working

ChatGPT freezes an app’s tool list when the app is approved. Later changes on the Moshi side do not apply until an admin reviews and publishes an update. Members are not prompted and admins are not notified when this happens. On Business you cannot update a published app. Recreate it and publish again. On Enterprise and Education, use Refresh under Action control.

Disconnect

Members disconnect under Settings, then Apps. Admins disable the app from workspace settings. Changing an app permission only changes when ChatGPT asks before using access it already has. Removing your Moshi organization membership stops access outright.
